Dynamic QR Codes

A dynamic QR code points at a short link you control instead of a fixed destination. That one indirection is what makes it editable after printing and what makes scan tracking possible at all.

Static vs dynamic, in one paragraph

A static code has your destination baked into the pattern. It is permanent and depends on nothing, but the only way to change where it goes is to generate a new code and reprint. A dynamic code encodes a short link instead; that link forwards to wherever you currently point it. Change the target in your dashboard and every already-printed code instantly leads somewhere new — no reprint.

"Editable QR code" means the same thing

If you searched for an editable QR code, a dynamic code is what you want — the two terms describe the same mechanism. There is no way to edit the pattern of an already-printed static code, because the destination is physically encoded in the black and white modules. Editability always comes from the redirect layer, never from the image.

When a dynamic code is worth it

Conversely, if you are encoding a Wi-Fi password, a phone number or a vCard, use a static code — there is nothing to edit and no reason to add a dependency.

The risk to understand before you print

A dynamic code depends on the redirect service staying alive. That is the genuine trade-off, and it is worth being blunt about it: if the provider disappears or moves your code behind a paywall, printed material breaks. This is exactly what people mean when they complain about QR codes that expired.

Two things reduce that risk: pick a provider whose free tier is permanent rather than a trial, and monitor the destination so you find out about a broken link before your customers do.

Tracking and monitoring

Because every scan passes through the redirect, a dynamic code can report how many times it was scanned, when, on what kind of device, and from roughly where — without identifying anyone. See QR code tracking for what is measurable and what is not.

Creating one

On the generator, choose your content type and switch the toggle from Static to Dynamic. You will need a free account so the code has an owner and an editable destination. Two dynamic codes are free permanently — not a trial.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dynamic QR code?

A QR code that encodes a short link you control, so the destination can be changed after the code has been printed, and scans can be counted.

Can I edit a QR code after printing it?

Only if it is dynamic. A static code has the destination encoded in the pattern itself and cannot be changed — you would have to generate and reprint a new one.

Is a dynamic QR code free?

Two dynamic codes are free permanently here, with no trial period. Static codes are unlimited and free.

What happens to my dynamic code if the service shuts down?

The redirect would stop resolving, which is the inherent trade-off of any dynamic code. Static codes have no such dependency, which is why they remain the right choice for content that never changes.

Does a dynamic QR code look different from a static one?

No. Both are ordinary QR codes. A dynamic one often looks slightly simpler because a short link encodes less data than a long URL.
